Medical Ethnobotany with the Zoque of Southern Mexico

The Zoque are the direct descendants of Mesoamerica's first great civilization and still inhabit the centre of this cultural-geographic region. Thus, they make for an ideal starting point for cross-cultural comparisons among Middle American indigenous groups. In this project I collected data on the Zoque ethnomedical system, herbal pharmacopoeia and selection criteria for remedies in a broad region encompassing the full linguistic and ecological diversity of this cultural group. The results will be compared between the different Zoque groups and across cultural and geographic borders in order to provide enhanced insights into the evolution of ethnomedical systems in Mesoamerica.
