Besuch des Royal Botanic Gardens KEW vom 21.-23. März 2025
Dank Dr. Andreas Lardos und Dr. Mark Nesbitt von Kew gardens durften wir u.a. hinter die Kulissen des Herbariums und der «Economic Botany Collection» blicken. Der Royal Botanic Gardens «Kew gardens» ist ein Weltkulturerbe, der vielleicht bedeutendste Botanische Garten weltweit, eine einzigartige Institution in London.
13 Mitglieder und Partner unseres Netzwerkes trafen sich am 21. März beim Eingang zum Herbarium. Der Kurator Dr. Mark Nesbitt führte uns durch sein Reich, in dem ungefähr 7 Millionen Herbarbelege konserviert werden. Diese Sammlung wurde seit 170 Jahren aufgebaut und ist für die Wissenschaft eine riesige Schatzkammer. Den Herbarbelegen können kleine Proben entnommen werden um das Erbgut (DNA) zu analysieren und die taxonomischen Beziehungen abzuleiten. Weitere Infos unter www.kew.org

Thanks to Dr. Andreas Lardos and Dr. Mark Nesbitt from Kew Gardens, we were able to take a look behind the scenes of the Herbarium and the Economic Botany Collection, among other sites of the garden. The Royal Botanic Gardens "Kew Gardens" is a World Heritage Site, perhaps the most important botanic garden in the world, and a unique institution in London.
13 members and partners of our network met at the entrance to the Herbarium on March 21st. Curator Dr. Mark Nesbitt guided us through his domain, where approximately 7 million herbarium specimens are preserved. This collection has been built up over 170 years and is a vast treasure trove for science. Small samples can be taken from the herbarium specimens to analyze their genetic material (DNA) and deduce taxonomic relationships.
